Fluid retention in the arms and hands can become more noticeable, especially during warmer months or in cases of lymphedema. Activating the muscle pump through targeted arm exercises can help relieve these symptoms.
A simple but effective exercise involves actively pumping the hands by spreading and bending the fingers while moving the arms dynamically. This activates the arm muscles and supports lymphatic drainage.
Regular practice is key to achieving lasting results. Over time, these movements can help reduce swelling, support circulation and improve overall arm mobility.
Because the exercise is easy to perform, it can be integrated seamlessly into everyday life. It can also be complemented with gentle lymphatic massage techniques to further support lymph flow and arm health.
How to Perform the Exercise
- Start by sitting comfortably or standing upright with your shoulders relaxed.
- Extend your arms slightly in front of you or out to the sides. B
- egin to gently “pump” your hands by opening your fingers wide and then slowly closing them into a soft fist.
- You can also bend and stretch the fingers repeatedly, as if you are lightly squeezing and releasing.
- As you do this, add small, controlled arm movements. For example, lifting the arms up and down a few inches or moving them forward and back.
- Continue for about 30–60 seconds, always keeping the movement gentle and steady. Focus on calm breathing and avoid rushing.
